A Sarcastic Appetite

A Week of Happy Hours

Sometimes it’s been one of those days at the office and you need a drink and a change of scene, or maybe your long lost sister’s boyfriend’s cousin’s next-door-neighbor is in town and you want to post up someplace without emptying your wallet. These are just a few recommendations, and when in doubt you should always do the neighborly thing and check with your local bar – chances are, they’re running some kind of deal too. Some of these are dinner deals, some are drink deals, and the rest are somewhere in between. After all, it’s our Greatest Depression – we might as well enjoy it….I guess….

Monday: Irving Mill has had a $15 burger-and-beer special for quite some time now, but they’ve done you one better: a glass of Cruzan rum, served neat, on the rocks, or in a Buck Island Cocktail.

Most restaurants are doing some kind of wine deal on Sundays and Mondays, so be sure to call ahead and ask if you’re heading out on the town to start the week off on that kind of note. A recent addition to this list is Beppe, which is doing half off wine on Mondays – courtesy of the Eater Dealfeed.

Tuesday: Artisanal is still hosting their Craft Beer Tuesdays, where all craft beers are half off after 5pm (regularly $7 to $13). They also do a Grilled Cheese bar, if you’re into that, so it’s easy to get out of there without paying too much these days.

Swing by Allen & Delancey for one of their $6 cocktails – but only in the bar area – all night long every Tuesday night. They’ve been running this promotion since the winter so the word is out; you’ll have to get there early for prime seating.

Citrine’s happy hour is a slightly classy affair, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get inappropriate. Or I will, anyway; their happy hour deal runs Tuesday to Friday, 5pm to 11pm. Drinks are $7 to $9, and while they’re a little, ahem, girly for my taste, there are a few I’d be happy to slurp down, like the St. Germain Cocktail with chamagne and, um, St. Germain.

Wednesday: Southern Hospitality has been hosting a Happy Hump Day Happy Hour, where drinks are $6 from 7pm ’til close. And that, my friends, is just one of many deals – SH also hosts Blue Plate Specials every night of the week and more drink specials than you can throw a stick at.

Wednesdays are also the home of the $1 oyster at Lelabar, a wine bar in the W. Village, though be forewarned: they only have oysters on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The menu is fairly limited but well-executed; pressed sandwiches, small salads, and an extensive cheese list courtesy of Artisanal.

Pera, near Grand Central, is still peddling their $9 for 3 meze, Monday to Friday from 3:30pm ’til close, and on Saturday from 5:30pm onward. Until 7pm, fork over $39 for 3 meze…and a bottle of wine.

Thursday: Word on the street is Mercat is now doing half off appetizers and wines from 5 – 8pm, every day. And by “word on the street” I of course mean “I read it on the Eater Dealfeed.”

Acme Bar & Grill features a rotating list of Happy Hour specials all week long, so stop in anytime and you’ll probably find something you like.  On Thursdays, sidle up to the bar and order $4 Hurricanes, from 4pm to 7pm. You can thank me later.

Friday: Centro Vinoteca has long been on my to-go list since they debuted a nicely edited menu of free bar food every day, from 5-7pm, paired with a $7 quartino of wine or an $8 cocktail.

Lure Fishbar does it up right every weekday from 5pm to 7pm – spring for the $8 fried oysters and the $5 beers, or go wild with the $1 oysters, supposedly straight in from Fire Island.
